If the donor doesn't want to be bothered with the item and doesn't believe the value exceeds that required by the taxation authority for a required appraisal, how can you value the items without having to pay for an appraisal?

There may be a faculty or campus expert who can provide you with a valuation.
Check for similar or identical items on Ebay or one of the other online auction companies.
Make some calls to local dealers in the items.
Check for collector's clubs or organizations that might be able to value the item at no cost to your organization.
Some local dealers of similar items in the community may provide an estimate for free.
