The month of February revealed a surge in new Major Gifts. From the first half of the month I tracked $154 million in major gifts that was surpassed in the last few weeks with $305 million more for a total of $459 million for February, 2010. This includes only those major gifts that I find in my day-to-day survey and is not the total amount of giving.  Take note of more evidence of what I refer to as Pockets of Philanthropy in 2009, when you review the campaign results from the Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's Healthcare in Louisville + the over goal report from the United Way in Roanoke, VA. Congrats all around.

In other Major Gift news I am in the final stages of completing my work on the Survey of Major Gifts & Philanthropy, Canadian edition,  to be followed by my Survey of Major Gifts & Philanthropy, USA edition.

Generosity can be viewed in terms of the dollar amount of the gift as well as the timing of such.

This morning a big round of applause goes out to last week’s collection of donors, especially the Ford Foundation. The $80 million dollar commitment to American workers is above and beyond the norm of foundation giving. It speaks to the sincerity of the men and women who make the call as to where the money can have the best impact, where they can make a difference.

With so many calling out in need, the five year pledge from the New York based foundation, will bring hope and ease the harsh reality of the economic plight of thousands of Americans.

What a marvelous gift to launch the Christmas ... Read More »

How important is a brand name in fundraising?

To APRA members who focus on background research about major gift prospects, this may not seem significant. Senior development staff and the donor community appear to be taking notice.

A part of that perception is translated in the form of brand name presence, the visibility of brand name and the frequency of how often the brand name appears.

Over the last week we have been witness to a remarkable week of public announcements of funding ... Read More »
