Major Gifts to Arts & Culture in 2009

Cincinnati, OH, Ohio arts patron Louise Nippert donated $75 million to support the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and another $10 million to the city’s opera and ballet companies and other classical-music entities, $75 million + $10 million

Washington, D.C., The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History announced that multibillionaire David H. Koch’s gift will finance the David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins, $30 million

Creve Coeur, MO, Chaminade College Prep received a gift designated for the construction and endowment of an arts center, 79,000 square feet in dimension with a 1,000 seat auditorium, $28 million

Los Angeles, CA, The late founder of the Museum of Latin American Art, Robert Gumbiner’s  bequest to the organization announced in Los Angeles, $25 million

Los Angeles, CA, Glorya Kaufman’s donation to the Dance at the Music Center program, thought to be one of the largest gifts of its kind to a dance program, $20 million

Atlanta, GA,The Goizueta Foundation made a 3 year grant to the Woodruff Arts Center to expand programming to students, $12 million

New York, NY, The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center was named in appreciation of his gift, $10 million

New York, NY, An estate gift from Michael H. Dunn to the Museum of Modern Art, $10 million

New York, NY, New York Philharmonic gift from Henry Kravis in order to endow its composer-in-residence program and establish an award for composers of contemporary classical music, $10 million

Washington, D.C., The Smithsonian, National Museum of African American History and Culture received a gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for the current capital campaign, $10 million

Ann Arbor, MI, University of Michigan dedicated its newly expanded Kelsey Museum of Archaeology display of long hidden artifacts from the Mediterranean with an estate gift from Edwin and Mary Meader, $8.5 million

Washington, D.C., William H. Gross gift to the Postal Museum will enable the museum to add a 12,000-square-foot gallery, named for Gross, to the 65,000-square-foot facility near Union Station, $8 million

Springhill, MA, Tom Shields and his wife, Mary made a gift to Stonehill Colleges that named the Shields Science Center in appreciation for their gift, $7 million

Newport News, VA, The Virginia Living Museum received a gift from an anonymous donor to help pay off the $9 million debt from the recent  capital campaign, the gift a $3 million challenge match if the museum can raise an additional $3 million by Dec. 31, 2009, $6 million

New Orleans, NO, The National World War II Museum received a gift from T.G. Solomon and his family, who helped found the Gulf States Theatres organization of movie theaters. The museum’s theater will be named the Solomon Victory Theater, $5.5 million

New York, NY, Adrienne Arsht Theatre Fund was named after her gift to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to support musical theater programming, $5 million

Louisville, KY, The Speed Art Museum received a grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation for the renovation and expansion campaign, $5 million

Los Angeles, CA, A donation from Haim and Cheryl Saban was instrumental in aiding the work of restoring the famed Wiltshire Theatre, that will be re-named the Saban Theatre when work is completed, $5 million

New York, NY, American Ballet Theater announced a gift from Toni and Martin Sosnoff to create the Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund, which will support all future works that it commissions. The gift was the single largest gift the organization has received from a private donor, $5 million

Springfield, MA, Springfield Museum of History received an anonymous gift for the museum’s expansion campaign, $4.3 million

Raleigh, NC, North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences named the SECU Daily Planet, part of a multi-media presentation area in the museum, a gift from the State Employees Credit Union members, $4 million

West Palm Beach, FL, John & Heidi Niblack’s gift to the Norton Museum’s Chinese art programs.  $2 million to acquire Chinese paintings and the balance split between renovations, educational programs and annual operating expenses over five years, $3.5 million

Washington, D.C., Collector, William H. Gross, sold his rare stamp collection and made a gift to the Smithsonian Postal Museum with the proceeds, $3.2 million

Tampa, FL,Tampa Museum of Art pledge from longtime supporters Frank & Carol Morsani and named the Frank and Carol Morsani Lobby Atrium in recognition of the donation, $3 million

Bloomington, IN, The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center received a gift from the Lily Endowment to support journeys back in time, $2 million
